Unsubscribe groups
Unsubscribe groups let your recipients opt out of specific categories of emails (like marketing, product updates, or newsletters) without unsubscribing from everything. They're how Mantle keeps you compliant with email regulations and gives recipients fine-grained control over what they hear from you.
How unsubscribe groups work
Every email you send is associated with one unsubscribe group. When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link, they land on a hosted preference page where they can toggle off any group your sender uses. Future sends to that recipient skip the groups they've opted out of, but they'll still receive emails from groups they're still subscribed to.
There's also a built-in All emails group. If a recipient unsubscribes from All emails, they're suppressed from every email you send — no exceptions. This group exists by default and can't be renamed or deleted.
Creating and managing unsubscribe groups
To manage your groups:
Go to Email in the main navigation
Select Settings
Open the Unsubscribe groups tab
Click Add unsubscribe group to create a new one. Each group needs a name (shown to recipients on the unsubscribe page) and an optional description (helpful context for the recipient when they're deciding what to opt out of).
Pick names that make sense to your recipients, not internal jargon. Good examples:
Product updates — "New features, releases, and changelog announcements"
Marketing — "Promotions, sales, and product news"
Tips and best practices — "Onboarding tips and how-to guides"
Choosing a group when you send
When creating or editing an email, you'll find an Unsubscribe group field on the email settings screen. Select the group that matches the type of email you're sending. If you don't pick one, Mantle uses the default group.
Adding the unsubscribe link to your email
Mantle generates a unique unsubscribe URL for each recipient, but it isn't auto-appended to your email — you need to drop it into your email body or layout using the {{ unsubscribeUrl }} Liquid variable.
The most common pattern is to add the link to your email layout footer so it appears on every email automatically. See the Email variables guide for the full list of variables you can use.
What recipients see
When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link, they land on a hosted page that shows every unsubscribe group your sender uses. They check off the groups they no longer want emails from and click Unsubscribe. The page is signed and scoped to that recipient — no login required.
After they save, future sends to their email address skip those groups automatically.
Manually adding recipients to a group
You can suppress an email address proactively without waiting for the recipient to click unsubscribe — useful if someone emails you asking to be removed, or if you're importing a suppression list from another tool.
From the Unsubscribe groups tab, open a group and click Add email addresses. Paste in one or more emails (separated by commas or newlines) and save. Those addresses will be suppressed from any email associated with that group going forward.
